BADI ASHA SCHOOL

Die die Badi Asha School ist das Hauptprojekt der Learn for Life Society und ist im Stadtteil Aurangabad in Varanasi gelegen. Die Schüler, deren Familien sich keine Schulausbildung für sie leisten können, kommen aus ärmsten Verhältnissen.

Ungefähr 60 Kinder im Alter von vier bis vierzehn Jahren gehen derzeit in die Schule - die Zahl steigt allerdings stetig. Fünf ausgebildete Lehrer und 3 Hilfslehrer kümmern sich ausgiebig darum, den Kindern Lesen, Schreiben und Rechnen beizubringen (sowohl in English als auch in Hindi).
Der Unterricht beginnt morgens mit einer Stunde Yoga auf dem Dach der
Schule. Danach werden die Kinder in den Fächern Hindi, Mathematik, English
und Social / Science Studies unterrichtet.

Am Nachmittag haben die Schüler die Möglichkeit, indischen Tanz und Musik zu studieren, zu nähen oder die Sprache Urdu zu lernen - sie können auch einfach nur in der Schule bleiben und spielen oder malen - Volunteers kümmern sich um lernschwache Kinder. Außerdem können sie sich in die schuleigene Bibliothek zurückziehen, um dort lesen zu üben. Für die Älteren gibt es am späteren Nachmittag eine Computerschule, in die auch Jugendliche der nächsten Umgebung kommen, die normalerweise keinen Zugang zu Computern hätten. Somit sind die Kinder den ganzen Tag in einem geschützten Umfeld und müssen nicht auf der Strasse bleiben.
Die Schüler bekommen täglich zwei Mahlzeiten in der Schule, wobei auf gesunde Ernährung geachtet wird - gekocht wird mit lokalen Produkten und ohne chemische Zusatzstoffe.
Sowohl die Kinder und ihre Familien als auch dem gesamten Schulpersonal wird kostenlose medizinische Betreuung durch den Verein zur Verfügung gestellt.



The Badi Asha School is the main project of the Learn for Life Society and is located in the district Aurangabad in the city of Varanasi. The pupils, whose parents cannot afford any school education for them, come from backgrounds of extreme poverty.

About 60 children between four and fourteen years currently attend the school. However, their number is steadily increasing. Five qualified and three assistant teachers are extensively concerned with teaching the pupils to read, write, and calculate (in English as well as in Hindi).
Classes start with an hour of Yoga on the school’s roof in the morning. Afterwards, the children are taught Hindi, mathematics, English, and social/ science studies.

In the afternoon, the pupils have the possibility to study Indian dance and music, to sew, or learn the language Urdu. They can also stay in school to simply play or paint. Volunteers take care of children with learning difficulties. Moreover, the pupils can adjourn to the library to practice reading. For the older ones a computer class is provided in the afternoon. It is also free for youth from the neighborhood that would normally have no access to computers. Hence, the children are in a protected environment all day long and don’t have to stay on the streets.
The pupils are provided with two meals per day, whereby great attention is paid to healthy food. The ingredients used are from local farmers and do not contain chemical additives.
The children, their families, and the school staff are provided with free medical care by the association.
